Why one room never cools: what we find in the ductwork

The call almost never comes in as a duct problem. It comes in as a room: the back bedroom, the converted garage, the office over the garage. Everywhere else in the house is fine, and that one space is ten degrees behind no matter what the thermostat says.

The first suspect is not the equipment

Homeowners usually assume the air conditioner is undersized or failing, and sometimes it is. But when the rest of the house holds temperature, the equipment is producing conditioned air. Something between the equipment and that one register is losing it.

What that something usually is

• Crushed flex duct. Flexible duct is easy to install and easy to destroy. Somebody stored boxes on it, or another trade knelt on it running a wire. A crushed section can cut the airflow to that branch dramatically without breaking anything visible.
• A disconnected collar. The branch pulled off the plenum or the takeoff and now delivers the full run of conditioned air directly into the attic. The room gets nothing and the attic gets an expensive breeze.
• Sagging with standing kinks. Flex duct that is not supported at proper intervals hangs in long bellies between supports. Each belly is a bend, each bend is resistance, and the farthest room pays for all of them.
• Undersized branch. Somebody added a room and ran a small duct off an existing branch instead of a proper takeoff. It was never going to be enough, and no amount of cleaning changes that.
• Torn liner and open joints. Tape dries out and releases. The joint stays roughly in place, but the seal is gone and so is a share of the air.

The second cost: what the leak pulls back in

A supply leak does not only lose air. The house has to make that air up from somewhere, and it does so by pulling from wherever it can: the attic, the crawl space, the wall cavities, around the recessed lights. That is how attic dust, insulation fibre and, in a house with a rodent history, contamination end up circulating through your living room.

This is why we treat air ducts as an air quality service and not only a comfort service. The air your family breathes circulates through the entire system, and the dirtier and more dysfunctional it is, the lower the quality of the air in the house.

Repair or replace

A single failed connection on an otherwise sound system is a repair: reconnect it, mastic the collar, support the run properly and you are done. A system with degraded liner throughout, undersized branches or material that has absorbed rodent contamination is a replacement, because sealing a dirty duct seals the dirt inside it.

We photograph every defect we find on the walk so the decision is made from evidence you can look at, not from a verbal summary at your kitchen table.

Measure the room before and after

The honest way to close out this job is airflow at the problem register before the work and again after it. It takes a few minutes, it costs nothing, and it turns the whole conversation from a promise into a number. If the number does not move, the diagnosis was wrong and we keep going.
