Drywall finish levels 0 to 5, explained without the jargon

Finish level is the single most common source of disagreement between a client and a drywall contractor, and almost always because it was never discussed. It is invisible on a quote and extremely visible on a wall.

The six levels, in plain terms

• Level 0. Board hung, nothing done to it. Temporary construction or a space where the finish is still undecided.
• Level 1. Tape embedded in joint compound at the joints. Ridges and tool marks are acceptable. Used above ceilings and in plenum spaces nobody will ever look at.
• Level 2. Tape plus one coat over joints and fasteners. This is the substrate for tile, or a finish for a garage or warehouse where appearance does not matter.
• Level 3. Two coats. Appropriate for heavy texture that will hide the surface underneath. Not appropriate for anything you plan to paint flat.
• Level 4. Three coats, sanded smooth. This is the standard interior finish for flat paints and light textures, and it is what most people picture when they say 'finished drywall'.
• Level 5. Level 4 plus a thin skim coat over the entire surface. This is what gloss and semi-gloss paints and critical lighting require, because those conditions reveal the difference in texture between the compound over a joint and the paper face of the board.

How to choose without overspending

The honest test is: how will this wall be lit, and what sheen is going on it? A wall lit softly from the front and painted flat will look excellent at level 4. The same wall with a window down one side, so the light rakes across it, will show every joint at level 4 and need level 5.

Paying for level 5 throughout a warehouse is waste. Accepting level 3 in a lobby is a mistake you will look at every day. Most projects are a mix, decided wall by wall.

What makes the difference on site

The level describes the outcome, not the method, and the method is where jobs are won or lost. Board layout that places joints away from raking light. Corner bead set straight and fastened rather than floated into position. Coats built up thin and sanded properly instead of filled in one heavy pass that shrinks and cracks as it cures.
